Satisfy your Japanese cuisine cravings at Spoon Cafe, G Hotel Kelawai Penang!

Pangs of Japanese cuisine cravings suddenly too overwhelming? Perhaps its time to consider heading to Spoon Cafe in G Hotel Kelawai Penang for its fantastical promotion of Japanese buffets, as Zac Teo explores...

Spoon Cafe in G Hotel Kelawai has been around the block for a couple of years, and yet it has never found a way to disappoint culinary or aesthetically wise. There's a delight tinge of east meets west when you step into the restaurant on Level 2, with the uniqueness of Peranakan motif cement tiles adoring the floors while wooden furniture bearing essence of the west plays hand in hand. Lightning is kept to a a warm level which surprisingly gives a really cozy feeling - but the tables are sufficiently lit to ensure diners can soak in the atmosphere and culinary delights thoroughly.

Penang365.com is honored to be invited back to G Hotel Kelawai to review their newly launched Japanese Buffet Dinner at Spoon Cafe. Previously we covered the Seafood Friday's Catch BBQ buffet dinner, and it is indeed pleasing to watch this restaurant constantly innovate and keep things fresh by rotating the themes during their weekend buffets. Diners can opt to start off the buffet with a healthy and refreshing range of starters and salad at the cold bar before tucking into chilled seafood on ice like mussels, prawns, and freshly shucked scallops.

As commonly with most Japanese cuisines, the aesthetically satisfying sight is commonly the sashimi platter. Arranged exquisitely and invitingly, deftly sliced selections of fresh salmon, tuna, octopus and a variety of sushi greets diners. We would strongly encourage these fresh cuts to be dabbed with the soy sauces and a touch of wasabi. Impressive to say the least as the quantities displayed may not be lavishly laid out - each plate is constantly refilled when it approaches emptiness as the freshness can be maintained at all times.

Just slightly after starting the meal, we were honored to be greeted by the chef himself behind the lavish buffet spread tonight.  While mingling and greeting fellow patrons, the very friendly and affable head chef introduced himself as Executive Sous Chef, Chef Ong Ban Khoon. With experience of up to 20 years in the culinary circuit, he explained on several items that formed his inspiration and also emphasized that all dishes are created while abiding to the Halal requirements. As Spoon Cafe is Halal Certified, Chef Ong shapes his culinary menu accordingly.

Savory treats satisfied, and we moved on to dessert! The wonderful team behind Spoon Cafe ensures diners that they can indulge in an endless array of desserts including cakes, pastries, ice cream as well as a chocolate fondue. On top of the common favorites, the pastry chef has made it a point to prepare several Japanese themed desserts as well.

Good wine, good food, good drinks, at G Hotel Kelawai! It is really the definition and embodiment of Style Redefined, with those seeking to further indulge in the culinary pleasure may opt for the free flow of house beer or wine just by adding on a RM65 per person.

Penang365.com would like to record its appreciation to the management of G-Hotel Kelawai for the invitation to review the Japanese Buffet Dinner.
