My friend, Bee Lee Tan an author, cooking teacher and international food demonstrator hailing from Penang but based in Perth, Western Australia was in town recently for a book launch.
The launching ceremony of her new cookbook, Penang Authentic Nyonya Cuisine : Mother’s Recipes was held at the Pinang Peranakan Mansion in Church Street, Penang.
It was an honour for me when Bee Lee Tan invited me to the launching ceremony. The event witnessed the attendance of distinguished guests, journalists, chefs and eager readers. Among those who attended the launch party was Raymond Kwok the Nyonya/Peranakan historian and Datuk Seri Khoo Keat Siew.

Bee Lee Tan made an opening statement appearing in a kebaya which is a very important culture of the Peranakan people.
She gave her address to the crowd and unveiled her second Nyonya cookbook, The Penang Authentic Nyonya Cuisine : Mother’s Recipes. The cookbook with one hundred eighty pages includes more than a hundred traditional and authentic Nyonya recipes and also colorful photos personally handpicked by her.
The book can be purchased with an email order at Beelee@live.com.au for RM120.
The event included a book signing session and a light teatime of delicious Nyonya kuih muih.

She has conducted master cooking classes at Beaconfield, Fremantle Australia as well as cooking classes in Perth’s T.A.F.E. Technical Colleges. Her website is at http://nyonyapassions.com/
I was very much impressed with Bee Lee Tan’s objective in promoting and conserving the dying art of traditional Nyonya cuisines. Do check out her first cookbook, Penang Nyonya Cuisine : Hawker’s Delight.
Thanks to Bee Lee Tan for the invite and for autographing my book. I probably will be taking some time making my own Nyonya cuisines!
Alamak... spotted! My family is famous now! Thank you so much with lots of hugs! :-D
ReplyDeleteBy the way, seeing your kuih-kuih photo made me craving for the Pulut tai tai now...going to get some later on :-P
Love to own these cookbooks. My favorite is the 9 layer kuih. Wonder can get it from major bookshops like MPH or Popular.
ReplyDeletePixen - Hope you have a great time enjoying yourself while you are in Penang.
ReplyDeleteSweet Jasmine - Not at the moment but you can always drop an email to Bee Lee.
Great Info! But I’m having some trouble trying to load your blog. I have read it many times before and never gotten something like this, but now when I try to load something it just takes a little while (5-10 minutes ) and then just stops. I hope i don’t have spyware or something. Does anyone know what the problem could be?
