Seafood Buffet at Spoon, G Hotel Kelawai, Penang: restaurant review

Who doesn't enjoy a lovely buffet dinner on a Friday night with friends and family to wind down from the hectic week? The Spoon at G Hotel Kelawai does exactly that, as Zac Teo explores

Fridays always brings a tinge of winding down as the work week draws to a close and many would seek a food outing with friends and family. Spoon Cafe at G Hotel Kelawai offers an excellent myriad in a form of a seafood buffet with their themed Seafood Friday's Catch BBQ.

Before starting the meal, I was happily surprised that the chef himself behind the lavish buffet spread tonight was out mingling and greeting fellow patrons. Very friendly and affable, he introduced himself as Executive Sous Chef, Chef Ong Ban Khoon. With experience of up to 20 years in the culinary circuit, the dinner tonight was in good hands as he took his time explain on his specialty and those must-try dishes tonight.

As tonight's theme for the buffet is Seafood Friday's Catch BBQ, the grilled crabs and slipper lobsters are a must have. The seafood bar located on the outdoor seating of Spoon Cafe offers a seafood galore - salmon, mud crab, slipper lobster, sausages, mussels, turmeric marinated squid and lamb. I particularly enjoyed  the slipper lobster as the flesh was done just right with the juices still locked in while the crabs had a slight tendency to get dry due to it being overdone at times.

As with the staple of all buffets, the hot section definitely appealed to the masses. Keeping in line with the theme of seafood, the carving section host the pespes seafood roll and also baked fish. According to Chef Ong, the portions served out at each hot plate is actually kept relatively small, as this would allow a constant replenishment of freshly cooked food instead of the traditional large platters to last through the entire night. Great move by the kitchen, in my opinion.

For the uninitiated, G Hotel has always maintained the offering of a theatrical dining buffet concept in the shape of an Action Station and preparing fresh dishes for patrons. It is definitely a delight, especially for those who fancy a plate of Char Koay Teow freshly off the wok. On top of that, the action station also prepares freshly grilled chicken and beef satay. I find this an excellent addition to the buffet spread as it allows customers a chance to try out some local fare in Spoon.

Desserts were abound, and the spread was indulgently large with a selection of cakes, pastries, ice cream, fruits, ice cream, and chocolate fondue. On top of the common desserts, the pastry chef has made it a point to prepare several local delights as to keep to the theme - and his offerings of nyonya kuih was excellent!

Spoon Cafe cast a reminisce of east meets west when you step into the restaurant on Level 2 of the relatively new G Hotel Kelawai. I've been to many cafes over the years, but the uniqueness of Peranakan motif cement tiles adoring the floors while wooden furniture bearing essence of the west plays hand in hand. Lightning is kept to an aesthetic level which surprisingly gives a really cozy feeling - but the tables are sufficiently lit to ensure customers can really see what they are enjoying.
