The year of the rooster is looming and nothing spells Chinese New Year better than delicious cuisines! Olive Tree Hotel in Bayan Lepas recognizes this and brings several new options for Penangites - with its range of buffet options, banquets and new menus throughout the Chinese New Year 2017.
Penang365.com was invited to review the culinary delights for the upcoming festivities, and we were briefed on the availability of three types of course meals - The Blessing 7-Course Set Menu at RM738nett per table, The Auspicious 8-Course Set Menu at RM888nett per table or Chinese New Year Eve 8-Course Set Menu at RM1288+ per table

The management of Olive Tree Hotel has been kind enough to arrange a review of The Auspicious 8-Course Set Menu for the evening, and it started off with the traditional Olive Tree Yee Sang Platter. Fresh slices of salmon was laid to rest on a bed of condiments, crackers, nuts, radish and much more. May the tossing bring great prosperity to you for the upcoming year!
As with most traditional Chinese banquets, the Yee Sang platter was followed by a soup and this did not disappoint. In fact, the Double Boiled Chicken Soup with Sea Cucumber and Dried Scallop was in fact an excellent concoction, with every mouthful pleasantly drawing sweet flavors from the scallops and chicken. This would prove to be an excellent alternative to the usual sharks fin soup as well.

The soup was followed up with the Crispy Golden Roasted Duck. Beautifully roasted while maintaining its succulent flesh, this serving of duck proves plentiful with every mouthful dipped in the dipping sauce.
No Chinese New Year meal will be complete, figuratively and literally, with a serving of fish. The kitchen team at Olive Tree Hotel dishes up a heart-warming Steamed Garoupa with Superior Soya Sauce. Amazingly, with its thick flesh, this culinary delight still remains tenderly fresh on the inside and not much sauce is required - the light soy sauce allows diners to taste the fresh meat of the fish.
Taking a break from the generous servings of seafood and meat, the upcoming dish is a great welcome. The Braised Mushroom and Homemade Tofu with Scallop and Broccoli is fortunately not overdone, kept simple with the various vegetables prepared in a light brown gravy. Maintaining its symbolism, black moss or simply known as Fatt Choy in cantonese tops the tofu in a playful manner.

Bombing right back to the seafoods, prosperity is never far away with a serving of prawns. In this banquet menu, the Stir Fried Tiger Prawns with Butter Cream Sauce tickles the taste buds with fresh large prawns fried and topped with dollops of butter sauce.

Approaching the end of the meal, the set menu is delightfully carved off with a serving of hearty Authentic Claypot Chicken Rice. Generous cuttings of poultry is topped on rice and subsequently steamed, resulting in a aromatic and extremely flavorful mouthfuls of rice.
Last but not least, wash down the entire feast with dessert - Snow Fungus and Gingko Nuts in Soy Bean Milk. Cold-style prepared and served in a generous portion, this dessert is bound to round off the meal nicely with its sweet yet heart-warming milk.
As mentioned earlier, there are plenty of choices for the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations to choose from at the Olive Tree Hotel Penang. On top of the aforementioned banquet sets, there are also buffet selections for lunch and dinner on the 27th, 28th and 29th of January.
